About the Artist

At Home in the Studio

Scott was born and raised in Bloomington, Minnesota a south suburb of the Twin Cities.  Where he has spent most of his life.  He has always had a great interest in art, but he had never taken any training until college.  It all began one semester when he needed to add an elective to his course load which turned out to be introduction to art history class.   Bethany College in Mankato, Minnesota is where this first exposure occurred.  He then continued to focus on art at the University of Minnesota where he graduated with a B.F.A.  Although he did not follow his passion after college until 1998, when he decided to further his training as an artist.

Minnesota River School of Fine Art was his first step forward, which encouraged him to follow a traditional approach and painting from life.  Next, combining his passion for art with his love for travel, he takes his first workshop with Jim Wilcox in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  At that point, landscape painting from life became his focus by continuing to study with some of the finest plein air painters in the country.  The list includes, Scott Christensen, Richard McDaniel, Jay Moore, Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young.

An energy and a freshness can be associated with painting from life.  Painting on location "plein air" and capturing the scene all at once "alla prima" has excited artists and collectors, especially back in the 19th century.  Currently a resurgence of this approach seems to be challenging countless artists around the country.  Painting on location and from life really hones your power of observation and helps to create your own style of interpreting nature.  Nature keeps the artist honest, and the skills learned are invaluable tools to bring back into the studio.
